A regional natural park is a fragile rural area, known nationally for its heritage and its remarquable countryside. Born from a strong wish locally to run a project of protection and harmonious development of the area, its vocation is to protect and keep alive the area’s natural, cultural and human heritage.
Created in 1977, the Luberon Regional Natural Park spreads across the south-east part of Vaucluse and the south-west part of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Within this perimeter, 72 towns from these 2 districts are members of the Park, which represents 155 000 inhabitants. There are no fences to delimit the Park, only a few signs to indicate the Park’s boundaries. One can travel around freely, while respecting fauna and flora, but also the people and their properties. For the Luberon has been an inhabited area for centuries. The name Luberon refers of course to the mountain itself, which spreads out from west to east, from the Petit Luberon to the Grand Luberon and finally to the Eastern Luberon, and reaches its highest point at the Mourre Nègre at 1100 meters. This position at the merging point of the mediterranean and alpine climatic influences brings about rare biodiversity which justified its classification by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.
When one thinks of the Luberon Park, its villages come first to mind : they seem laid in the middle of fields or at the top of hills. From the start, the Luberon Park has attempted to preserve this heritage, to convince the inhabitants and the town councils to protect it and also to enrich it without stiffening it. On the long term, this effort has largely contributed to give a unity to the Luberon Park aspect without weakening its diversity.
